As far as I'm concerned, the Venn diagram between Stardew Valley lovers and horror lovers is a circle.
I know I'm not the only one who's wished we could have a game like Stardew Valley with a spooky twist, which is why I was so excited to see the announcement of We Harvest Shadows, a first-person farming sim with horror elements.
The developer David Wehle promises that We Harvest Shadows will bring both the creepiness of classic horror games like Silent Hill paired with a compelling first-person narrative similar to What Remains of Edith Finch.
Is this too specific of a niche?
In We Harvest Shadows, play as Garrett, a lonely man who has exiled himself to work on an abandoned farm. Players will fix up their house, care for livestock, and build their farmstead, all while exploring the hundreds of acres surrounding the farm. But at night, something sinister stirs in the forest. Is it all in your head?
The developer promises these features will be included in the game:
Experience a slow-burn horror/drama focused on atmosphere and storytelling instead of jump scares.
Explore miles of abandoned Appalachian wilderness, set to a gorgeous cinematic soundtrack.
Focus on building your farmstead instead of worrying about hunger, thirst, or an inventory screen in this "Survival-lite" experience.
Clean and organize your house to help prevent hauntings and regain your sanity.
Optimize your farm to earn money and buy new vehicles, tools, and player upgrades.
Piece together the mystery of Garrett's life via flashbacks, voiceovers, and journal entries.
I'm personally a fan of anything that has to do with Appalachian horror, putting hundreds of hours into Fallout 76 just for the music and environment. I'm incredibly excited to experience this farming sim mixed with Appalachian horror!
Farm, feed your chickens, and explore a beautiful forest during the day, and venture out to your own peril at night in We Harvest Shadows!
We Harvest Shadows currently doesn't have a release date, but you can download and play the demo on Steam here.
