Gurranq, Beast Clergyman is an NPC in Elden Ring. Gurranq's quest line in Elden Ring rewards players 9 times, one reward for each Deathroot that players bring him. The promise of 9 rewards makes this quest one that every Elden Ring player should do!
Below is where to find Gurranq, how to complete his questline, and the locations of all 9 Deathroot in Elden Ring.
Gurranq, Beast Clergyman is located at the Bestial Sanctum in Dragonbarrow in Caelid. This NPC doesn't move from his location throughout his quest and can be fought and killed for an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. Instead of reaping another smithing stone, players can opt to complete the Beast Clergyman's quest and collect 9 Deathroot throughout the Lands Between.
How to Start Gurranq's Quest Line
To find Gurranq, players must first interact with D, the Hunter, another NPC that players will encounter earlier in Elden Ring. D can be found in Liurnia in Stormhill, west of the Summonwater Village Site of Grace. Hunter D will be standing over a corpse. Talk to him and he'll tell you to avoid Summonwater Village.
This of course means that your next boss fight will be found in Summonwater Village. When you arrive in Summonwater Village, you'll see a mysterious ghost on a ghost boat. Venture a little closer to initiate the fight with the Tibia Mariner. The Tibia Mariner is a fairly easy fight as he moves slowly and summons weak skeleton minions.
After defeating the Tibia Mariner, the first Deathroot will drop. D, the Hunter has now moved to Summonwater Village. Seeing the player with the first Deathroot, D will offer to introduce you to Gurranq, the Beast Clergyman.
Finding the Bestial Sanctum
After accepting D's offer to introduce you to the Beast Clergyman, D will put a marker on the player's map to a portal to Caelid. This portal is just behind the Third Church of Marika hidden behind some bushes. This portal will take players right to the Bestial Sanctum. This area surrounding the Bestial Sanctum is much higher level than Liurnia, so players should be careful.
After speaking to Gurranq for the first time, he will offer you the Clawmark Seal and the Beast Eye. This Beast Eye will help players find the remaining 8 Deathroot. When players are near a Deathroot, they will get the notification "The Beast Eye quivers..."
Finding the rest of the Deathroot
Deathroot is a key item in Elden Ring:
"A source that gives rise to Those Who Live in Death.
The beast clergyman, found at Bestial Sanctum in the distant east, collects and devours these roots.
On the night of the dire plot the stolen Rune of Death enabled the first Death of a demigod. Later, the Rune of Death spread across the Lands Between through the underground roots of the Greattree, sprouting in the form of Deathroot."
Players receive the first Deathroot after defeating the Tibia Mariner and use it to start the Beast Clergyman's questline.
The second Deathroot can be found in Limgrave in the Deathtouched Catacombs. The second Deathroot will be in a chest after defeating the Black Knife Assassin.
Players will encounter the Tibia Mariner again to find the third Deathroot. Located in Liurnia, players should find the Artist's Shack Site of Grace. The Tibia Mariner will be located just south of the Site of Grace. Defeat him again to get the third Deathroot.
The fourth Deathroot is also found in Liurnia at the Black Knife Catacombs. This Deathroot will be in a chest after defeating the Cemetary Shade. After giving Gurranq the fourth Deathroot, he will become hostile. Players must wear him down to a low HP but not defeat him.
If players kill Gurranq during this stage, they will not be able to complete the rest of the Deathroot quest. After wearing down his HP, Gurranq will go back to his usual resting place. Players must walk away and come back or rest at a Site of Grace to trigger his next dialogue.
The fifth Deathroot is in the Altus Plateau. Players will have to defeat the Tibia Mariner for a third time at the Wyndham Ruins.
The sixth Deathroot is also in Mt. Gelmir. Players must defeat the Red Wolf of the Champion located at the Gelmir Hero's Grave.
Players will have to defeat the Tibia Mariner one last time to get the seventh Deathroot. In the Mountaintops of the Giants, players will have to defeat the Tibia Mariner near the Castle Sol Main Gate.
The eighth Deathroot is also in the Mountaintops of the Giants. This Deathroot will be found in a chest after defeating the Stray Mimic Tear in the Hidden Path to the Haligtree. This secret dungeon requires have the Haligtree Secret Medallion Left and Haligtree Secret Medallion Right to activate the Grand Rift Hold.
Inside the Hidden Path to the Haligtree, players will find one obvious path that leads to the Consecrated Snowfield, and another path that leads deeper into the catacombs and the eighth Deathroot.
The final ninth Deathroot can be found after defeating the Ulcerated Tree Spirit inside the Giants' Mountaintop Catacombs.
