Every week, players can pick 1 high-level item from the Great Vault. There are 9 total slots you can fill from completing dungeons, raids, and world content. Here are all the ways to fill the Great Vault every single week.
Blizzard has made some changes to the Great Vault in The War Within, giving players that don't play PvP more chances to get high level gear from the vault every week. The Great Vault opens each week after the servers reset on Tuesday, rewarding players for the challenging content they completed the previous week.
Here are the changes Blizzard made to the Great Vault for The War Within expansion:
The PvP row has been removed and replaced with a World Content row
World content like Delves will progress this row in the Great Vault
PvP players will receive more conquest than before, giving them more opportunities to purchase gear instead of receiving an item from the Great Vault
There are 3 rows in the Great Vault, one for raid rewards, one for dungeons rewards, and one for world content now. Every slot is filled in when a players completed 2, 4, and 6 or 8 activities for that particular content.
Raid Great Vault Rewards:
There are 3 Great Vault objectives for raiding that require defeating the current season's raid bosses each week. If you defeat 2 raid bosses, you will unlock one piece of loot to choose from in the Great Vault. If you defeat 4 raid bosses, you unlock the second slot, and if you defeat 6 raid bosses, you unlock the final slot.
Keep in mind that you have to complete content for the current raid, and that legacy content doesn't count towards Great Vault rewards. You can only choose one piece of gear per week, and defeating raid bosses adds 1-3 choices.
For Raid Great Vault rewards, the loot pool is equal to the loot that drops from the raid bosses you defeated. Meaning that if you only defeat Ulgrax the Devourer and The Bloodbound Horror, the loot choices in your Great Vault will only be pieces that drop off of those bosses. If you join a saved raid and defeat bosses in the middle and end of the raid, the loot would only be from those bosses.
The Great Vault loot is also proportional to the difficulty of the raid. If you defeat heroic raid bosses, you'll receive a piece of Heroic-level gear in the vault. If you defeat raid bosses on Normal difficulty, you'll receive Champion-level gear in the vault, and if you defeat bosses in Looking for Raid, you'll receive Veteran-level pieces of gear to choose from in the Vault.
To fill out the Great Vault, players should complete the entire raid on any difficulty they can. If you only defeat 2 raid bosses on Heroic difficulty, fill out the rest of the vault with Normal or LFR to increase your chance of getting a piece of tier. Even accepting a lower-level item that completes a tier set is usually an overall DPS increase.
Try defeating 6 raid bosses on any difficulty to fill out those 3 slots in the Great Vault!
Great Vault Dungeon Rewards:
There are 3 slots in the Great Vault that are filled out by completing dungeons in The War Within. Players are rewarded by completing any dungeons from Heroic level to +10 mythic keystones.
Players unlock dungeon rewards in the Great Vault by completing 2, 4, and 8 dungeons. For Mythic+ dungeons, players just have to complete the dungeon, not necessarily time it in order to receive the Great Vault reward.
Unlike raid, where Great Vault rewards are locked to what bosses were defeated in raid, any piece of dungeon loot can drop from the Great Vault. The rewards also increase when players complete dungeons in Mythic+.
The quickest way for players to get their Heroic 4-piece tier set bonus is by completing 8 dungeons on a +7 mythic keystone. Even if you can't time the keys, just finishing them will add the Heroic item slot to the Great Vault. To choose a high-level piece of gear from the Great Vault every Tuesday, it's vital to finish the most difficult keys as possible. A heroic or myth-track piece of gear will make keys even easier the next week.
World Content Great Vault Rewards:
For The War Within, Blizzard replaced the PvP Great Vault selections with World Content. Players can now complete Delves, Events, Weekly Quests, and Special Assignments to fill out the last row of Great Vault rewards.
In order to receive Great Vault rewards from Delves, players must complete 2, 4, or 8 delves on any difficulty. Similar to Mythic+ dungeons, players have to complete Level 7 delves to unlock Hero-track gear in the Great Vault. To fill out the Great Vault, players should complete 8 delves on any difficulty.
Players should fill out the World Content row in The Great Vault every week because tier pieces can drop from those Great Vault slots. Blizzard previously stated that tier pieces wouldn't drop from the delve Great Vault slots, but they changed their minds once the expansion released.
In order to fill out the Great Vault completely every week, players should:
Defeat 6 raid bosses on any difficulty
Complete 8 dungeons Heroic-level difficulty or higher
Complete 8 delves or other world events
