Cult of the Lamb and the Local Co-Op Controversy

Building a cult is more fun with a friend! Cult of the Lamb's Co-Op mode titled "Unholy Alliance" released on August 12th, 2024 for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, letting players complete the entire campaign with a friend in local co-op.

Cult of the Lamb has been a smash-hit game since its release in 2022, boasting a 10/10 rating on steam with over 75,000 reviews. The publisher, Devolver, has released half a dozen DLC's and free updates since the game's release, keeping momentum going for the indie game.

Cult of the Lamb's free local co-op update, Unholy Alliance, has received backlash since the announcement in June. One writer for Rock-Paper-Shotgun said "Ah, local co-op. Not online then. I guess this is for real-life people with real-life friends and a proper real-life sofa."

Although it's disappointing we won't be able to play Cult of the Lamb in online co-op, I think it's refreshing to bring couch co-op games back into the limelight. Although I have fun playing games on Discord with friends around the world, there is something different about playing a game together together.

Cult of the Lamb's Unholy Alliance local co-op is a chance to put down the headset and connect with someone you care about without the distractions of discord.

If you're like my boyfriend and I, you may have a Player 2 already, and you spend the majority of your down time sitting at separate desks across the room on discord with mutual (his) friends! It's refreshing to have a new opportunity to huddle around the same monitor or actually use our Switch connected to the living room TV to play something physically together.

If you're still looking for your Player 2, Cult of the Lamb is the perfect game to use as an icebreaker! Being cute, spooky, funny, and now local co-op, it's the perfect game to use to start making memories with a new friend or partner.

I think we should see more local co-op games come out in the future. There's an unending list of new MMOs and other online games coming out every year, and it's refreshing to see a popular game choose local co-op.

Of course, it's more likely that Devolver doesn't want to sink money into creating online servers than caring about the quality of human connection. Regardless, it creates a unique opportunity to put the headset down and connect with a longtime partner or new acquaintance and create memories that only come from doing an activity together in person!

Cult of the Lamb's Unholy Alliance update includes local co-op for the entire campaign, multiplayer fishing and knucklebones mini-games, and new co-op tarot cards to unlock.

I personally hadn't played Cult of the Lamb until the local co-op function launched, and I had a ton of fun! I definitely recommend trying it. If you don't have a copy of the game yet, you can grab one here.
