5 Ways You Can Play World of Warcraft: The War Within as a Cozy Game

Updated: Sep 23

You can run around Azeroth as a witch brewing potions if you want to!

The War Within adds several tutorials along with the brand-new story mode dungeons for gamers that want to experience the beautiful story-telling and cinematics in the campaign without difficulty. The new story-mode difficulty, along with mount farming, pet battles (yes, like Pokémon), and professions like herbalism and tailoring makes World of Warcraft playable as a cozy game!

If you're new to World of Warcraft, you probably have some preconceived notions of what the game is about. You probably picture PC gamers up late at night, banging their heads against the wall trying to kill the same raid boss for the 30th time. You may have heard that playing WoW is a full-time job, and to not bother if you want to do anything else with your time.

The release of World of Warcraft: The War Within is a perfect opportunity for me to introduce you to the cozier side of WoW!

With the release of The War Within, Blizzard added a ton of new features that are helpful to brand new players.

  1. Story mode raids and follower dungeons. Before The War Within, players depended on having a party of other players to experience WoW's iconic raids and challenging dungeons. Blizzard has now introduced Story mode raids and Follower Dungeons that players can enter individually! The game provides a party of NPCs and reduced difficulty for players that want to experience the narrative aspect of raids and dungeons.

2. Mount farming. Out of all the things you can collect in World of Warcraft, mounts are one of the most popular and most fun! There are well over a thousand mounts in the game, and all are used to either walk or fly your character from place to place. Many mounts are rewards for completing certain quests and getting certain achievements.

If you want to play WoW as a narrative RPG, mount-farming is a great way to experience the game! With the new Skyriding feature in The War Within, all flying mounts can zoom through the skies, gaining momentum and soaring upwards like a real dragon!

3. Pet collecting and pet battles. Pets are tiny companions that you can either summon to walk with you throughout the game or choose to battle with against other players! With the introduction of the Trading Post in the last expansion, Blizzard offers even more pets to collect and rewards for doing in-game content like completing quests and doing pet battles. Similar to mounts, many pets are rewards for completing quests and getting achievements!

Pet collecting is another way to play World of Warcraft in a relaxing, cozy way. Blizzard also uses pets to raise money for different causes. For example, the cinder kitten pet raised money for relief after Hurricane Sandy.

4. Taming hunter pets. If you want to play World of Warcraft as a cozy game, play as a beast-master hunter! This hunter class commands their two pets to attack while you shoot your bow from a distance. Hunters have the "tame" ability which allows them to collect hundreds of in-game animals to use as their pets.

You can name your pets and access them from a stable in all major towns and cities! Playing as a hunter, you can tame everything from foxes and wolves to ghost animals and mechanical animals! Use this Secret Hunter Pets guide to see how to find rare hunter pets.

5. Profession Training. There are over twelve different professions in World of Warcraft, and they all make The War Within playable as a cozy game! Players can choose two main professions to level and make money within WoW including: mining, blacksmithing, skinning, alchemy, fishing, cooking, first aid, engineering, leatherworking, herbalism, tailoring, enchanting, archaeology and more!

If you want to play WoW as a cozy witch game, get the professions herbalism and alchemy to gather plants and craft potions. If you want to have more of a Stardew experience, building your fishing and cooking professions!

You can also play any number of secondary professions like archeology, where you fly to ruins throughout Azeroth and dig up rare artifacts. There are even more rare mounts and pets you can get through professions like the Fossilized Raptor and Spirit of Eche'ro.

With the release of The War Within and the upcoming Fall season, now is the perfect time to start playing World of Warcraft. The War Within brings additional resources to new players like Follower Dungeons, and surely the October trading post will include some spooky transmogs to get in the mood for Halloween!

Whether you want to collect pets, mounts, dig up fossils, or forage in the forest, there are endless ways to tailor your WoW experience to be whatever you want it to be!
